Beijing singer-songwriter Mixol shares ‘mixologist’, the latest glimpse of her debut EP The Fool, out 15 June.
A cult-inspired art-pop artist, Mixol embodies a witch stepping into her full potential, drawing inspiration from her “four mothers of creation” — Björk, Kate Bush, Fiona Apple, and Sheena Ringo.
‘mixologist’ is a coming-of-age reflection on navigating adulthood and the passage of time.
Exclusively with LOUD WOMEN, Mixol discusses how the track’s title ‘mixologist’ connects to their artist name:
“The behind the scenes story is pretty interesting! I somehow just got the name “Mixol” from the scale mixolydian popped up in my mind out of nowhere, and I have a friend who shared his dream which titled “mixologist”. I actually wanted to name myself “Mixo” at the beginning, but then I thought with a “L” might makes the name even cooler since it sounds like painkiller pills and stuff, for me they all have a “L” at the end…? Or I’m just trying to be cool haha. As for the dream, it’s about when the world got controlled by aliens and everyone has to drink lemonade to know whether they will be sent to the space exploring or stay on the earth and work for the aliens or something…? I can’t clearly remember the details but in the end, my friend pulled out his phone and found some letters showing up on the screen – mixologist. He just knew the title of that dream is mixologist when he was dreaming, probably because his subconscious told him that? I found it very cool since I‘ve never had a dream that tells me the title of it! So I just named the song “mixologist”, the only difference is that my song is not about the aliens, but myself and the monster living inside me. I just borrowed his dream to be my inspiration which is really fun…!”
