Witch Fever at Oslo, Hackney - photo by Artemi Falzon

Tonight we worship at the altar of all that is heavy, grungy and guitar driven, and the crowd congregation gathered at Oslo tonight is eager for it. Opening with ‘DEAD TO ME!‘, the first single they released from the new album Fevereaten (you can read our review of it here) Witch Fever unleash their angry, coarse audio assault. No encouragement is needed for the mosh pit to open, just singer Amy reminding the crowd not to throw fists or you’ll get chucked out while slower songs ‘Safe’ and ‘Amber’ give the crowd a chance to catch their breath.

Calls for older track ‘Sour’ turn to offers of payment to play it after Witch Fever encourage buying merch with them being broke after their arena tour supporting Volbeat and Universal Credit not thinking that being in a band is a worthy job. They do play a trio of tracks from their first album, Congregation, in a row, ‘Blessed Be Thy’ followed by the rather unique title track and then then punky ‘Reincarnate’.

Coming out for an encore, Witch Fever surprise the crowd with a well received cover of Deftones – ‘My Own Summer’. And even that wasn’t the end of the party, with Witch Fever joining Girls Gays Theys for an after party with DJ sets from them and Jason (GGT) which they are also doing in Sheffield and Manchester.

All the supports on this tour have been hand picked by Witch Fever, and tonight it comes from Bristollian 6 piece Knives who definitely woke up the crowd. Knives’ set was non stop energetic and heavy, their music sounding like ska punk and metal had a baby. And the crowd definitely were into it, with mosh pits splitting the crowd from second song ‘PHD’, and crowd surfers and even a stage dive during penultimate track ‘Eat Thy Neighbour‘ off their album Glitter, during which one of their guitarists disappeared into the crowd while providing the backing vocals.
