German-Filipino pop singer and songwriter Bunny Alex has just released a new single, ‘Ugly Crying’. It might not be the motivational song we needed for the start of the year, but she has definitely reminded us that not all parts of our lives have to be romanticised.

A quiet guitar riff and Bunny’s voice open up the song with a feeling you might have come across before:

“This is a new low even for me”

There comes a time when everything might feel just a little too much, even to the strongest people. And as the tension in the rhythm builds in frustration over having to put up a brave face in a world built on fake reality, the softness of Bunny’s voice draws you back in to the moment. It’s a reminder that letting yourself release your emotions does not have to look pretty, but you do need to let go of the unrealistic expectations that are set by social media to let it feel pretty.

Bunny shared with us the moment in which this song was born, and it’s a real reminder that we all need to switch off from the digital world from time to time:

“When I wrote this song my mental health was at a real low point. I felt insecure and scared, and endlessly scrolling on social media only made it worse. So I wrote a song about it, just me and my guitar, and it healed something in me.“ – Bunny Alex

With its soft pop rhythms, this song will definitely join the rainy day playlist right next to Lewis Capaldi and Benson Boone.
