Venus Grrrls won’t dispel any claims of them performing witchcraft, entering to the sound of ‘The Craft’’s Nancy screaming “I’m Sorry”, before kicking into opener ‘Ivy Tree‘, where GR’s vocals leave the crowd thoroughly enchanted. Not that their fans would complain, with many dressed for the occasion in witchy and gothic finery.

The crowd built up quickly for tonight’s gig, a perk for both the two supports acts, and the audience getting to see all three bands.

Taking time in their set to encourage folks to give blood (in a lifesaving, not spell-fuelling way!) and to appreciate best friends, they mixed wholesomeness and helping others within their witchy set, including crowd favourites ‘Liar Liar’ and ‘Bloodsick’, which got the crowd singing and moving, while sapphic coded love song ‘Divine’ was a breath of fresh air in an industry with so much straight-orientated pining.

Girlband! kicked things up a notch, bringing a more classic combination of riffs and melodies to their rock sound. The Nottingham-based trio got to show off their prowess in the instrumental sections. Whilst doing a great job of getting the crowd well warmed up, a comment by guitarist and singer Georgie sparked the crowd into an impromptu sing-a-long of Nelly‘s ‘Hot in Herre’. They finished with ‘Not Like The Rest’, a song about coming out, something that many in the crowd seemed to resonate with, whilst a final callout against fascism got a loud cheer.

Opening the night, Velvetine‘s distorted guitars built to crescendos, while Mia Scarlet’s vocals flew over them. The London-based four piece played with vocal effects to add to their alt-rock and noise soundtrack, leaving the crowd so entranced it took a second for them to realise that the show was indeed over and start clapping.
