Norwegian artist EERA embraces a distinctly female lens for her third studio album, I’ll stop when I’m done., out now via Test Card Recordings.
After years spent living and working in London, EERA (aka Anna Lena Bruland) now calls Berlin her home. The Norwegian singer and guitarist recorded her latest project between the German capital and Barcelona alongside Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor. Taylor’s undeniable indie rock sound is imbued in I’ll stop when I’m done., despite the album’s distinct female focus.
EERA draws inspiration from the starlets of Hollywood’s Golden Age for this project, weaving connections between the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Shirley MacLaine to the modern woman. The album title itself is taken from a quote attributed to Monroe:
“I don’t stop when I’m tired, I’ll stop when I’m done.”
Like Monroe herself, all of EERA’s tracks feel sumptuous and engrossing but always with a tinge of darkness rumbling below.
A delicacy akin to Adrianne Lenker’s is heard across EERA’s vocals allowing for such thematic and lyrical sentiments to take centre stage. “Scared to feel… I need you to keep talking,” EERA confesses on ‘Talking’ before launching into the depths of her feelings on ‘Honey, do you see me?’ where she’s “losing my mind” in an almost-psychedelic synth-driven haze.
