North Carolina quartet, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, has released astounding alt-rock magic on their latest album, bones, via Atlantic Records.

This record is the raw unfiltered sound of Rainbow Kitten Surprise doing what we love to do. We called it bones because we were clearing skeletons out of our closet. These were both musical and interpersonal dynamics that we had to release before we could make this record what it is.”

Album opener, ‘Friendly Fire’ is the tale you tell after the salt is in the wound. Sharing the pain of cracking open your core only for it to be weaponised against you alongside RKS’ signature lilting guitar is the cleanse I wasn’t prepared for. ‘Friendly Fire’ exposes the underbelly of betrayal while simultaneously dragging you up for air.

‘bones’ has some of my favourite melodic sequences of the album. Packed with rhythmic shifts and the RKS candor I adore, this song demands tears and dancing. From the fast to slow lyrical performance from Ela to the sweeping beat changes, ‘bones’ has enough edge to sting but enough sincerity to heal.

Gentle piano opens ‘King’ before unleashing an infectious, playful beat over a trepidatious love note. Starting shy and skeptical and ending entranced and hopeful, ‘King’ left me feeling giddy and eager to shower my partner in kisses. A perfect party track with a beat fit for a dancefloor, ‘King’ is effortlessly on repeat.

‘Stars’ is another stellar love track that gives you that feel-good vibe. Heartfelt and humanly divine, this song makes you believe in good things again. A serenade to die for and the aura that brings me back to RKS again and again, ‘Stars’ is a track that can help through a long night.

When ‘Dang’ was released, I was over the moon, and now that bones is finally here, I can confidently say this is my album of the year. Fragile yet fearless, Rainbow Kitten Surprise stands in a musical majesty all their own. With lyrics that will navigate the chasm in your chest and melodies that will help you transcend the chaos, bones is lovely and raw in a way that 2025 desperately needed.
