Birmingham electro-punk duo Monoxide Brothers just released ‘Horses’, a track that charges forward with all the ferocity and urgency you’d expect from a song inspired by Ken’s line from the Barbie movie:

“When I found out the patriarchy wasn’t about horses, I just lost interest anyway.”

(just) Ken

The track bursts out of the gate with a razor-sharp synth line and a relentless kick drum rhythm, pulling the rug from under you with its sharp dissection of the patriarchy, from misogynist microaggressions to victim-blaming. Vocalist Sophie Hack tells us,

“It’s empowering to look the crowd in the eye while performing it and make them think about how they or someone they know has treated women in the past and for them to reflect.”

The accompanying video, an unsettling piece of cut-out animation inspired by the likes of Angela Anaconda and 90s Steve Madden ads, matches the song’s eerie, yet irresistibly catchy vibe. It’s equal parts creepy and cute, and that’s exactly how we like it.

Set to feature on their upcoming EP Manic Pixie Dream Pop, ‘Horses’ is a fiery introduction to what’s to come. The Monoxide Brothers are here to make you think, move, and rage – don’t miss it.
