Australian singer-songwriter Mikayla Pasterfield shares debut EP Heritage Listed.

Heritage Listed is a beautiful mix of nostalgia, the desire to hold onto one’s childhood and the comforts of familiarity, and the desire to expand beyond the streets you’ve grown up on in order to become all you feel you could grow to be.

From the very first track on the EP, ‘Heritage Listed’ there is a sense of recognition, almost as if you’ve heard this before, cementing that feeling of nostalgia, but as you listen you realise you’re listening to something new and expanding. The further into the EP you get the more complex and emotive the songwriting becomes, with ‘Voodoo’ perfectly capturing the sensation of a relationship that’s pushed to breaking point, whilst each still holds the hand of the other, not willing to part. ‘End Of The World’ features lyrics that ask questions we all have felt of undisclosed love, yet asks them in the most wonderful and unexpected way, creating powerful images about how we may perceive things, in hindsight.

The vision for the EP centre’s around the uniquely rural-suburban elements of Camden, where I grew up – exploring the elements of my hometown and childhood that shaped my relationships, heartbreak, highs and lows of my life till now.

Mikayla’s sound shares something with Nelly Furtado in the tone of her vocals, the title track, had me thinking Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, whilst ‘Voodoo’ had a bit of a Florence and the Machines vibe going for it. Mikayla’s style is diverse, though her characteristic vocal tone and lyrical depth are continued throughout the EP, making it distinctly her.

Mikayla has worked with director Nick Sullivan, to create a series of truly wonderful and moving music videos to partner with this EP. The imagery chosen makes you feel you’re looking into a piece of Mikaylas own life in ‘Heritage Listed’, the video for ‘Voodoo’ is powerful and simple yet so strongly emotive, using interpretive dance to express the depth of emotions in the songs lyrics and the video for ‘End of the World’, whilst being post apocalyptic, somehow manages to tie the stories within the series of videos together, defintely worth a watch.
