Swedish songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Miynt (born Fredrika Ribbing) returns with her third album, Rain Money Dogs. Taking creative isolation to a whole new level, Ribbing took a solo trip to a secluded island; here she learned to trust her own instincts with music and experimentation to create the latest and most ambitious instalment in her discography.

The songs of Rain Money Dogs ooze with this new sense of complete self-assurance and freedom. Listening to Miynt’s guitar solos, there’s a real sense of pleasure and improvisation that produces alive, dancing melodies.

Album opener ‘Blu-ray Land’ leads us into a sonic world of dreamy, psychedelic indie-pop, with hypnotic, deadpan vocals that feel nostalgic of the early 2000s. In terms of theme, the whole album is centred around the current and looming state of our world; the uncertainty of AI, doom-scrolling, and the epidemic of loneliness, although Ribbing recognises the complexities of these issues.

My thoughts on what’s happening at the moment aren’t necessarily very clear, it is a confusing time to be alive.”

‘I am I am what’ is a stand-out track for me. There’s an air of darkness to the underlying feel of this song, making the hushed vocal tones more wonderfully unsettling in this context. The lyrics include a playful nod to The Beatles, representing Ribbing’s father’s vinyl collection that served as so much of her musical education. Driving guitar rhythms and crashing drums make this one of Miynt’s heavier songs, and we’re here for it.

Album closers ‘Everything is easy’ and ‘Data Life’ are perfect wind-down tracks with floating, ethereal soundscapes; other-worldly and soaring but with a laid-back California vibe. The overriding feeling of Rain Money Dogs is one of transcending escapism and freedom; Miynt brings us to that island.

Music felt like my own secret world, but I wanted to start letting other people in.”
