Maybe Not Tonight sees Brighton four-piece, Lime Garden band together to produce their most intoxicating and luminous material to date, following the success of 2024 debut album One More Thing. Written during the aftermath of all four members going through a “mass breakup” the album began the journey to reconcile their respective relationships with drinking, grief, body image and self-esteem.
Being bolder and not shying away from our experiences, that’s what this album sounds like to us,” says lead guitarist Leila Deeley, who forms Lime Garden alongside [Chloe] Howard, plus Annabel Whittle (drums, production) and Tippi Morgan (bass). “It’s a real statement. Listening to it should feel like a big punch in the face!”
The album tracks the arc of a night out, where unplanned adventures hold sway, fresh impulses are inhabited feverishly and only the rush matters. Opening track ’23’ instantly gets wanting to join them on the dance floor with its bouncy base and a looping synth line, yet beneath its big chorus it is haunted by a mid-20s kind of angst of now being an adult, regardless of whether you feel like one.
For the band the album marks a new artistic frontier with Whittle studying new production techniques from the likes of Bon Iver and Jim-E Stack. With each member developing there own personal touches the result is popier melodies and dancefloor friendlier tracks such as ‘All Bad Parts’ inspired by musical icons from Scissor Sisters and the Breeders to St Vincent and New Order.
Maybe Not Tonight sees a band that has overcome the challenges they have faced both personally and professionally, seeing the band back in a place where they are wide-eyed, hungry and determined again to take on the world and not take no for an answer.
“We’ve got this fresh feeling that we deserve to be here. After a really crazy period of time in our personal lives, we’ve returned to wanting to own our confidence. That’s a special thing.” says Howard.
