Ukrainian punks Death Pill just released their first single ‘Craterface’ off of their upcoming album Sologamy (slated for 20 June via New Heavy Sounds) and it is truly a wild, aggressive, riot. Though the album was written prior to Russia’s invasion of the nation of Ukraine, it still manages to hold the values and energies of those who are currently being oppressed. It also comes together beautifully considering Mariana, Anastasiia and Nataliia have been separated by the ongoing invasion with Drummer Anastasiia going to Spain with her young son and bassist Natalia to Australia. Singer/guitarist Mariana remained in Kyiv.

‘Craterface’ is a fast-paced and introspective track. Titled after a term many are familiar with from their pock-faced acne years, the song is themed around the battle with self loathing and the scars of former struggles. With lines like “hate, is that a game, is that a game, I’ll be your self destruction” and “look how broke you are, i’ll cut you down” there is no mistaking the energy here. These feelings will not win, this fear will not win, self-hatred will. not. win.

When describing the song the band explained;

“The protagonist feels not only anger toward others but also rage toward themselves for their own helplessness. This fury transforms into a thirst for revenge—a painful yet powerful way to cope with suffering.  “Craterface” is my ultimate catharsis. A catharsis of consuming hatred, of the vengeance that eats me from the inside. “Let’s be honest—haven’t we all felt this way at least once?”

And it’s true, especially in an era of so much global conflict, many are facing the world with a sense of helplessness in the face of hatred. Death Pill has created an anthem here, giving a rallying cry for those who choose to take these feelings and turning that rage against the systems that look to oppress us into a will to fight.

The vocals are full of screaming, ranting, and raving against the idea of letting these marks defeat you. The guitars are unrelentingly fast, going full tilt throughout the song and giving no quarter. The bass gives the same amount of depth and speed pretty solidly chasing the guitar. The drums are also full of blasting energy offering a satisfying definitive final beat at the end.
