San Francisco queer emo-pop band gloomy june explores grief on their latest release ‘picking scabs’ – emotional, catchy, and painfully relatable. Lead vocalist Alexi Belchere reflects on the death of her older sister, who passed away from a drug overdose in 2020.
Belchere shares the following about ‘picking scabs’ and the aftermath of losing her sister:
“It’s about interacting with family in her absence, and the haunting realization that I’m getting older and she never will.”
“This song feels like a reflection of the contradictions we all face in our emotional lives. There’s always something tragic and something beautiful happening simultaneously, and we hope that people can hear both in this song.”

gloomy june will be releasing their self-titled LP this year.
