MUNA lovers and disgruntled fans of The 1975, rejoice! Dirt Flirt is the new queer pop star here to provide for all your dreamy synth-pop needs – and her latest single, ‘Bodycount’, is a real stunner.
London-based singer-songwriter Kit Eaton-Kent, who performs under the Dirt Flirt moniker, is a self-described “ex-emo” with an ear for memorable hooks and an affinity for tasteful autotune à la Charli XCX and The Japanese House. Though the handful of singles she’s released up to this point demonstrate her songwriting skills plenty well – in fact, her song “Dramatic” was our Track of the Day back in November – “Bodycount” is a radio-ready pop hit that truly showcases her capacity to balance glossy, grandiose production with lyrical vulnerability.
A bona fide breakup anthem, ‘Bodycount’ arrives just in time for Valentine’s Day (especially for the brokenhearted and bitter among us). The song “recounts the guilt of watching a loving relationship go sour […] of being everything to someone, then being reduced to nothing but a number in their bodycount.”
Keep an eye out for Dirt Flirt; she’s got a new EP on the horizon and is sure to be a name to look out for in the months to come. You can catch her at the Camden Assembly on 13 February for DNü’s HMGRWN Series.
