With genres constantly merging and blurring lines, taking the most exciting, upbeat parts of pop and electro and marrying them with heavy, pure, unfiltered emotion, is a feat in itself. Sheffield trio Air Drawn Dagger have done just that with their new single, ‘Castle’.
Castle is an epic anthem with themes of retribution, the band leaning into archaic influences, citing their main inspiration for the song being a painting in Nottingham castle depicting a mob, fire fuelled revolution.
The band have clearly mastered their storytelling, the sound and lyrics literally painting a picture for listeners, so you feel this revolutionary energy despite the context.
The song opens with a funky electro beat and later leans into the bands pop punk elements with the fast paced drums and repeating melodies, even with some metalcore touches in the bridge, and the chorus crashes into classic emo vocals from lead singer Maisie Manterfield.
Mixing so many genres can sometimes be a risk, the masses are always so eager to put bands into one box, but for ‘Air Drawn Dagger’, this risk has paid off, showing their versatility while establishing themselves as a band to keep an eye on.
