Look towards Slovakia’s own Karin Ann and it couldn’t be more clear: her time is now.

Whether it be the nominations for ‘Discovery of the Year’ at the Czech Republic Music Awards, add in sharing a stage with Imagine Dragons, Alfie Templeman, and My Chemical Romance, and here lies an artist whose talent is skyrocketing upwards.

As time ticks down until her debut album through the telescope releases on 10 May, the latest offering ‘False Gold’ conjures a blend of musical styles and demonstrates a visceral sense of self-expression in bravely covering themes such as love, identity, and mental health.

Featuring production from Okkervil River members Benjamin Lazar Davis and Will Graefe who combine on this track to channel the energy of folk revolutionaries such as Jessica Pratt and Mazzy Star and to immense credit, manages to walk the line between folk inspiration and the restless buzzy rock seen in artists such as Francis of Delirium.

Karin Ann’s new single is an extraordinary show of talent to wrap complex themes into storytelling-like ability in lyrics such as

“Thought I heard the church bells;
But now I see you were just false gold;
I’m left here looking like a wet dog;
Tremblin’ like trees in the wind.”

Such lyrics allow her to delve deep into the struggles of gender equality, mental health and toxic relationships.
