A few days ago, we were with the French band MADAM to discover this trio of rockers who’ve been making waves in the scene. The group, consisting of Gabbie Burns (guitar), Anaïs Belmonte (drums), and Marine Masachs (bass), is often considered the heir to L7 and the Runaways. Having already blown our minds with their two EPs (I in 2018, II in 2022), the band is now working on their debut LP.
As a french band, why sing in English?
We never really questioned it. It’s a pleasant language to sing in, with more musicality than French. French as a language is more about spoken word, English is more associated with music for us. Also, there’s a cultural aspect; the rock we grew up listening to was in English.
How did you form the band?
Initially, Gabbie posted some ads on social media to create a band solely with female musicians. At the beginning, we were four. It clicked instantly, so even though we thought about doing some covers, we actually began composing songs right away. Now we’re three. Chris left after the first EP, but she left us in a good place.
Did you feel any changes between the two EPs?
With Chris leaving, we had to readjust tasks, which meant more work for all of us. At that point, we decided we were a band and not just a lead singer with musicians behind her. Gabbie took up the guitar, and we all started singing. In a way, we all found our place, and now we’re more in sync.
In your experience, are there any differences when playing only with women?
YES. For instance, our sound and lighting engineers are women, that allows us to travel together in the same truck, which makes things simpler. While this setup might change someday, for now, it’s been great. Also, there have been instances in other bands with guys where they discuss compositions among themselves, and you end up being left out.
Where are you with imposter syndrome?
Doing better! At the beginning, it was a challenge. Nowadays, there are only a few moments when it really resurfaces, like soundchecks or individual interviews. What helped us was being aware of all the work we put into what we do. During the tour, we were playing 3-4 times a week while also finishing the record ; we know that we work hard, and that gives us confidence. Except for Marine, she’s just cool.

What do you think of projects aiming to highlight women in the music industry?
It’s frustrating that we have to do that, but we need it. And it can be so encouraging too. That’s why we participate in initiatives like More Women on Stage and why we are glad that LOUD WOMEN exists!
What are your upcoming plans?
We just finished touring with our last EP and are still working on the LP but, you can expect to hear from us soon. And, we hope to do a tour in England when the time comes!
