This week Cate Tomlinson brings us an absolute banger of a summer breakup anthem: ‘Blueberry Season’.
The Palo Alto-based singer-songwriter manages to capture the melancholy vulnerability of a breakup song without leaning into fragility. There is no doubt in the singer’s mind that she will be fine (in time) – the driving emotion of the song is frustration that her ex will continue to be awful and not care, or face any consequences. A too-real story, but one that’s satisfying to hear vocalized. Tomlinson’s gorgeous voice sells the narrative, rich and dripping with emotion. The whole song (music and lyrics) echoes with transformation and change – the end of summer, the end of a relationship, a new season, a new you.
“…Blueberry season is the brutal in-the-moment experience where you just have to feel the bad feelings for a while before you get better…even when it feels uncomfortable to be low, especially because of what someone else has done to you, the healing process doesn’t work unless you go through the gritty parts. You can’t really skip the steps to get back to your normal self.”
