Ngunnawal Ngambri quartet Glitoris have released their latest single ‘Sock Puppet,’ a playful but outspoken rock opera explosion. Starting as hearty punk rock denouncing modern society, the song shifts into exaggerated theatricality towards the end with statements such as ‘We have come here to manipulate the discourse,’ ‘Destabilising democratic process’ and ‘Divide and conquer, conquer!’ projected from the contrasted perspective of the internet bots.

“‘Sock Puppet’ is a modern-day commentary on the destabilising of Western democracy and targeting of minority groups with propaganda, through mass-coordinated networks of online trolls, sock puppet accounts and data misuse,” explain Glitoris, while drawing inspiration from the spreading of misinformation and interference in presidential elections. “We wanted to take online trolls by the horns and march them back to the farms they came from!”

The song is taken from the group’s second album, Glitoris, due for release 14 July, which explores themes such as protesting, feminism, and general everyday inconveniences (such as spoiler alerts) with attitude and melodrama.

‘Sock Puppet,’ as well as introducing what can be expected from the album, is a hyperactive journey of sonic emotions that well represents how social media is just one vast piece of immersive theatre.
