London-based Picture Parlour has fully captured the harshness in which we view ourselves with a beautiful and brutal candour in their latest rock single, ‘Norwegian Wood.’
The track calmly opens with a deceptively steady melody that quickly gets swept up by the swaying, smokey vocals belted by lead singer, Katherine Parlour. While ‘Norwegian Wood’ starts as a warning or sharp-tongued confession, it culminates with quite a profound declaration as the song slams to a close. It’s a perfect example of the inner battle made manifest and how much we can make ourselves suffer under the glare of that lens. There’s hope present, but only just, and it’s this feeling that makes ‘Norwegian Wood’ so jaggedly striking.
Musically, the accompaniment cradles the vocals and tactfully swings from soft to sudden, goosebump-inducing crescendos further establishing ‘Norwegian Wood’ as an intoxicating track for me. If you’re feeling fed up and frustrated, this may be the perfect cathartic track for you. Personally, I’m keeping my eye on Picture Parlour and I can’t wait to see what they release next.
