Our Single of the Week is the fabulous new single by the London-based mummycore kitchenpunk band I, Doris. Released today, their new song ‘HRT’, is a clap-along banger, containing a driving bassline, catchy keytar bop and enormous guitar riffs. This song speaks to the frustrations and challenges of navigating the healthcare system, particularly when it comes to accessing hormone replacement therapy.

Despite the serious subject matter, ‘HRT’ is full of punk rock fun and humour, with playful lyrics and an instant singalong chorus. The accompanying music video, directed by talented filmmaker Minni Moody, features a cast of hormone replacement therapy users of all genders, who come together to create a powerful visual representation of the song’s themes of resilience and rebellion. This was partly filmed guerrilla style in TK Maxx in Brixton, with band members Doris and Doris being captured and removed from the store, adding to the rebellious spirit of the song. Apparently they actually got kicked out in real life, how punk is that?

Additionally with lyrics such as …

these procrastinations give me palpitations, my oestrogen receptors having aggravations

… I suspect Sylvia Plath collaborated on this tune as I doubt anyone else could make this poetry rhyme so beautifully and rhythmically.

Check them out at their LOUD WOMEN-hosted ‘HRT’ launch party at the Windmill in Brixton on the 24th June, where they will be joined by Les Futiles, The Untitled Band Project, Rat Pussy and The Menopause Army, tickets here.
