Charley Stone: 5 Question Interview

The legend that is Charley Stone (who has played with too many bands to mention, but a few of them include Desperate Journalist, Salad, Sleeper, Gay Dad...) will be playing the next LOUD WOMEN Club night at the Piper in St Leonards/Hastings on Thursday 9 June and we couldn't be more delighted. For those of you who don't know her so well yet we asked her a few questions.

1. For people who’ve not heard you play live before, what can we expect from you at the LOUD WOMEN gig?

It’s just me and an electric guitar, channelling my inner Jonathan Richman / Jack White / Daniel Johnston but with a voice more reminiscent of Tanya Donnelly or Mo Tucker, probably.  I never play the same set twice, and I don’t always play the songs the same way – they generally veer off on a tangent. Also I talk a lot between songs, partly because the songs are very often just the punctuation mark to an image or waking daydream and I kinda want to show-my-working.

2. What’s the most important thing we need to know about your band right now?

Well, it’s not currently a band, mainly because I don’t have the money for proper rehearsals. But I would love to one day play these songs with a drummer and at least one other person making noises. For now it’s just me, flying by the seat of my pants and seeing what I can make of this new situation. I’ve been in so very many bands over the years and I’m enjoying the challenge of doing something completely different and feeling like a complete beginner again

3. If you could add any musician (live or dead) to your band lineup, who would it be?

Leslie Langston who played bass with the original line-up of Throwing Muses. She retired from music way way back but there’s no one in the world who played bass quite like her

3. Pass the mic – who are your top 3 contemporary bands?

I’m pretty obsessed with Panic Pocket and also with Chorusgirl – both are signed to Reckless Yes and in fact their whole roster is worth checking out. Can I only pick one more? It probably has to be Desperate Journalist then, as they’re prob my absolute faves, and even though I play live with them I think I’m allowed to say that as I’m not actually part of the songwriting/creative partnership.

4. Draw us a picture…

Here’s one I did recently – the text is from
