I never feel so passive aggressive, confident or direct about my vagina as I do when watching Art Trip! Watching Melodie stare the crowd down and groove out society’s flaws isn’t the only star of the show; the band are incredible together live and make you feel part of them, too.

This was the first time I’ve seen this band who are label mates with LIINES. I was smiling throughout their set (as were they!) Indie pop with melodies, bounce and beat, I have vowed to buy an album when I’m paid.

Fuuuuuuck. I’m no writer and am trying to write about the set, but, fuck. They were great and I (me!) danced throughout. You must go see them.

LIINES: On and On – new music

Manchester’s LIINES are on fire right now. Having just hopped off a 30+ date tour with Sleaford Mods, and just about to embark on their own headline tour, they’re releasing a blinder of a new single, On and On, out Friday 24 May on Reckless Yes records next Friday 24 May. It’s a frenetic but ultimately satisfying 2 and a bit minutes of the driving dissonance that have made us weak at the knees for LIINES since they first graced a LOUD WOMEN Fest back in 2017. Sigh. Anyway. Here’s a sneaky peak of the new goodness:

On and On is LIINES’ first new material since releasing stunning album Stop-Start last May – it will be released digitally next Friday 24 May, via Reckless Yes. It can be pre-saved on Spotify and pre-ordered on bandcamp.

The LOUD WOMEN Top Albums of 2018

The results are in! From nearly 100 nominations for LOUD WOMEN album of 2018, Team LOUD WOMEN has whittled a Top 20 from which we present the joint Top Five Albums of 2018 because frankly we can’t and won’t choose between them. (And if you want to skip right to the music, here’s a Spotify playlist of the winners to brighten up your afternoon!)

The 2018 LOUD WOMEN album of the year is therefore shared by five artists; and if that wasn’t enough we’ve inaugurated a spanking new LOUD WOMEN People’s Vote Readers’ Choice Award chosen by LOUD WOMEN readers themselves (who are clearly better at making decisions!)

Without giving too much way at this stage let’s just say that it’s been a good year for block capitals: here goes! 

The LOUD WOMEN Top Five Albums of 2018:

Big Joanie – Sistahs

With stellar gigs performed all over the London-based DIY scene that they call home and extensive radio play on shows like BBC Music Introducing, it’s been a big year for Big Joanie. The feminist punk trio have certainly ended 2018 with a bang thanks to the acclaim that’s already been given to their debut album Sistahs…By allowing their true feelings to be at the forefront of their songwriting, the band create tracks that truly empower the listener; not only to rebel but to check their own activism, to continue growing, and to do better. GUTTFULL – Tits and Nails

“An irrepressible sense of fun runs through Tits and Nails, in spite of everything its lyrics address. ILL – We Are ILL

They write songs which are both silly and serious, and they attack them (as well as each other) playfully. You can make a case for pretension in art, but there’s none with ILL; like so many of the best bands they seem like a gang you’d love to join, but ILL go one better and make you feel like you’d be welcome: friendly if not quite family-friendly (unless the family in question is more Addams than Partridge, perhaps). … A perfect storm of enigma, whimsy and controlled violence, and a genre-straddling state-of-the-nation address. LIINES – Stop/Start

‘Long-awaited’ might be a cliché, but in the case of LIINES‘ debut album, it’s a fitting description for a band that’s evolved steadily from fin-de-siecle Manc post-riot grrrl stalwarts Hooker: the tightest, heaviest rhythm section in DIY supports Zoe McVeigh’s emotional vocals and haiku-like songwriting, together conjuring an atmosphere of taut, claustrophobic menace like a UK postpunk time capsule. Sink Ya Teeth – Sink Ya Teeth

A perfect ten tracks of no wave-disco electropop on a brilliant debut album from this Norwich duo. Described by The Guardian as “Thrillingly chilly, perfectly funky, no-wave straight out of early 80’s NYC…except that Sink Ya Teeth are a duo from Norwich. In a different era they’d have been all over TOTP” 4/5

The Menstrual Cramps – Free Bleedin’

The Menstrual Cramps is an anti-capitalist feminist band, therefore expect direct attacks on Tories, Neo-Nazis, big brands, business owners, famous idols who shouldn’t be idols anymore, and of course, “boyz-who-will-be-boyz”. The songs are so catchy that half of the album will get stuck in your head after giving one listen to the whole album. They produce music rapidly, though diligently. This rapidity actually shows itself in the guitars as fast riffs, playful strokes and abrupt small silences and it just sounds so good and steady. [Read more from this review]

LOUD WOMEN announces the 2018 HERcury Prize shortlist

LOUD WOMEN’s 2018 HERcury prize shortlist is a bakers’ dozen (whittled down from 30) of albums released between July 2017 and July 2018 by British-based, (self-identified) female, female-fronted and female-driven bands. Votes cast by Team LOUD WOMEN. Not much crossover here, you’ll notice, with lesser, so-called music prizes.
Winner to be announced 21 September via Facebook Live!

1) Argonaut – Argonaut Forever (November 2017)

“Raw and fragile and urgent in all the best ways,” to quote Loud Women’s review; Argonaut’s third album presented last year’s new material and revisited key tracks from their first two albums, serving as a liminal release before the unveiling of their revamped band line-up for 2018.

2) Bratakus – Target Grrrl (August 2017)

Probably the best Scottish sibling bass ‘n’ drum grunge album since, well, The Twistettes’ LP the year before, Bratakus are just one of many Caledonian bands rocking Loud Women’s world right now. Short sharp punk soundbites and catchy-as-hell chant-a-longs on this well-received debut, like a charmingly-gnarly hybrid of The Exploited and The Distillers.

3) Chvrches – Love is Dead (May 2018)

No inverse snobbery around these parts: Chvrches’ third Top 10 album has one firm foot in 21st Century stadium pop and the other in 80s electro, and Loud Women love it like we love our Taylor Swift and Yazoo albums. Lyrics like ‘Graves’ hint at political bite beneath the glossy perfect-pop sheen.

4) Crumbs – Mind Yr Manners (July 2017)

Debut album from this Leeds-based ‘funk post-punk disco pop party pack’ fourpiece. They’ve got the stripped-down, melodic tunes, they’ve got the best song titles (‘Stockport Syndrome’, ‘Ciggy Stardust’) and they’ve got a place in the 2018 Loud Women Fest line-up!

Surely in itself reason enough to get tickets.

5) Dream Wife – Dream Wife (January 2018)

Much-loved, tune-packed debut from this Brighton-based pop-punk trio. Unmistakably Icelandic vocals atop an irresistible noughties-new wave sound that recalls the likes of CSS and New Young Pony Club.

6) Goat Girl – Goat Girl (April 2018)

A deserved Top 30 chart placing rewarded Goat Girl’s eponymous debut, an unexpected delight of an album from a young, all-female group sounding wise beyond their years and uncategorisable to the genre-fixated. The band traverses a range of moods across 19 song-sketches held together by a deceptively lazy-hazy vocal. Did that song really recommend several methods for literally executing the Tory government? Yes. Yes it did.

7) ILL – We Are ILL (May 2018)

“A perfect storm of enigma, whimsy and controlled violence,” according to our reviewer, ILL’s debut album has only been blowing minds for two months, yet already feels somehow like it’s always existed. A genre-straddling state-of-the-nation address, with added bear growls.

8) LIINES – Stop-Start (May 2018)

9) Nervous Twitch – I Won’t Hide (November 2017)

“Catchy lo-fi garage pop” says our reviewer, and it’s the third album in only as many years from this DIY Leeds trio. One of three albums in the shortlist from Cardiff’s Odd Box Records, Nervous Twitch present 14 tracks of surfy guitar and Headcoatees-esque vocals, with a 60s girl group influence.

10) Rainbow Reservoir – Channel Hanna (February 2018)

Perfect indie-punk-power-pop with clear riot grrrl influences from this Oxford trio, fronted by Connecticut native Angela Space. The title track tells you everything you need to know, but there’s not a bad song on Rainbow Reservoir’s varied and entertaining debut.

11) Shopping – The Official Body (January 2018)

DIY queercore supergroup-success-story Shopping show no signs of running out of credit (yeah we went there) on their third album in five years. With Edwyn Collins back in the producers’ chair, the pace is faster, the bass is heavier, Rachel Aggs’ vocals have a newly-won confidence and their ability to paint propulsive-yet-plaintive pictures (ref. ‘Asking for a Friend’) is in full effect.

12) Sink Ya Teeth – Sink Ya Teeth (June 2018)

A perfect ten tracks of no wave-disco electropop on the brilliant debut album from this Norwich duo. And omg that *is* Gemma from KaitO!

13) Suggested Friends – Suggested Friends (November 2017)

Soundbites like “instantly catchy guitar work”, “strong singalong chorus” and “lush harmonies” litter our review of this self-titled debut from Suggested Friends. Something of a supergroup featuring members of Standard Fare, Chorusgirl and Wolf Girl, the band brings some of the sensibilities of those groups to this record, mixed with 80s/90s influences and an epic quality unusual for the DIY indiepop scene.

Our favourite Manchester trio, LIINES, have a stonking a new single out today.  ‘Find Something’ is out on Reckless Yes Records and we love it – raunchy rock with with distinctly retrogoth finish – the perfect soundtrack to solo-dance round your bedroom. Have a good good Friday!

interview: LIINES

1730 LIINESLIINES are your new favourite post-punk trio from Manchester. With three storming singles released so far on Reckless Yes, and a debut album on the stove, all eyes are on this sharply-focussed all-woman band to see what’s next. Cassie Fox caught up with Zoe McVeigh (Vocals/Guitar) and Leila O’Sullivan (Drums) ahead of their main stage slot at LOUD WOMEN Fest on 2 Sept.


Cassie:
I love finding out how bands get things done off-stage. How does LIINES work?

Zoe: I write the songs, or at least the shell of the songs. Come up with hooks and melodies, and take them to rehearsal, with a structure – or that’s something we work on together. I love watching new songs unfold. It’s so exciting when you feel you’re onto something special and you can’t wait to play it live! I write all the lyrics too. There’s no way I could put so much into someone else’s words.

Leila: It’s an exciting day when Zoe comes to rehearsal with something new to try out, especially as I know she’s strict with what she brings to us, so whatever she does bring is always going to have something worth trying out. I’m really excited by some of the later tracks we recorded for the album. It’s taken us in a slightly newer direction and so I can’t wait to start working on some new tracks for playing live later in the year.

And aside from being the one who has to lug the most gear around… I take on a lot of the admin-y stuff – gigs, travel arrangements as well as our website and social media stuff. Maybe the less glamorous side of being in a band, but there’s definitely a lot to do and it keeps me busy!

Who were your musical inspirations growing up? And what current artists are inspiring you right now?

Zoe: I was very much into stuff my dad played me. I grew up listening to really exciting music such as Siouxsie, Bowie, Iggy, Lou Reed, Alien Sex Fiend, Bauhaus. Lots of men in make up, lots of expression, lots of rule breaking and history making. I absolutely loved it. Some of the artists I’m loving at the moment are Bully, Daughter and Nelson Can. Also, earlier this year, we got a bit sick of turning up to ‘alternative’ bars and clubs and only hearing male artists – sometimes there was the odd female/band played, but rarely anything current or daring. So we started a Spotify playlist of music written and performed by female artists we love. It’s not that we don’t like, or aren’t influenced by male artists. It was just in response to these experiences, and we’re quite pleased with how it’s taken shape. We’ll be definitely adding some of the LOUD WOMEN Fest artists in the coming weeks!

Leila: I was into grunge/rock and britpop when I was younger, the likes of Nirvana, Hole, (early) Foo Fighters, Elastica, Pixies etc, and was going to gigs and festivals as soon as I could. I still love seeing bands live – though don’t get to as many gigs as I’d like – but we’ve been lucky to play with some ace bands recently including Pet Crow, Heavy Heart and Cherry Hex and the Dream Church. All three are very different but we really loved their sets and what they’ve released so far, so encourage people to check them out! More established artists that I’ve loved seeing live in the last six months that have been really exciting shows include Peaches, The xx and even Arcade Fire last month in Manchester. These are artists and bands who have been around a long time and come back to do live shows that have blown me way, many albums in – what an amazing place to be!

What are your goals as a band?

Leila: Our main goal over the last few years has been to get our album finished and OUT – and after a REALLY long time we’re very nearly ready! We’ve kind of been holding back a bit this year until the album was done, so we’ll be wanting to get out and about as much as well can off the back of the album release later this year and beyond. We’ve had some incredible experiences playing gigs and festivals across the UK. So I think a big goal for us is to open up new opportunities off the back of our album release, and see where it takes us!

One goal we’d had for a while was to get some support or mentoring in some way as it sometimes can feel quite difficult to know the right things to do (or not do) as a band. We were really fortunate that Reckless Yes (in the form of Sarah Lay and Pete Darrington) approached us early last year. They’ve been a really important part of our development over the last 12-18 months, two really experienced, passionate people who have our backs, and who we’re lucky enough have been willing to put our first 7” – and soon our debut album! We love the other bands they’ve been working with through Reckless Yes too, so we knew we were onto a good thing!

Zoe: We’re really lucky to have experienced travelling around and playing in Europe quite a bit, which have been some of our best times (in life!) ever, so we’d love to get back there to tour our new album!

We’re excited to hear that your debut album is coming soon – tell us more! 

Leila: As I said, our album has been a LONG time coming but we’re really glad we’ve taken the time to do it right – we’re so proud of where we’ve ended up with it. Like most bands, we’ve had to self-fund recording the album. This has taken a few years to be in the right place money-wise, as well as song-wise. Then getting everything in place to work on the tracks and record them has taken time around work and other commitments. So it’s been a slow process, but we finally got there.

Zoe: When we signed to Reckless Yes one of the first things they recommended was to work with producer Paul Tipler. He’s got such a big track record of working with bands we love – and love the sounds of – so we were bought in immediately. It’s been a completely new process working with Paul. Whilst some of the songs have been more straightforward recording-wise, we’ve loved the development of recording others, trying some new techniques or making the tracks a bit different to how we’d play them live. I think we, and Paul, are really pleased with how it’s turned out, so we’re really excited for people to hear it.

Leila: We’ve not quite got a release date yet, but we’ll be announcing one in the not too distant future, as well as some gigs! We’ll be announcing news of our album first to our mailing list, so sign-up!

You’ve had a brilliant run so far I’d say! What advice would you offer bands starting out? 

Zoe: Haha, we’ve done ok! Obviously it’s always nerve-wracking when you’re releasing new music but we’ve been really pleased with the response so far… and now we’re nervous to see what people think about the album! In terms of advice, I would say go out any play as many gigs as you can. It’s the best way to really develop your songs and own style, as well as making friends and contacts along the way. Another thing is it’s important to be true to yourself. Write for yourself. I think it’s much better to watch an honest performance than watch someone acting on stage. I get so much more out of real emotions, when a performer has conviction.

Leila: Releasing music is obviously a big part of getting your music out there. LIINES had been around a while before we released anything – until then we only had an EP we were selling at gigs. We had a band meeting in a pub (the best meetings!) and it was one of the first times we’d taken a step back and made a plan – to release our first single, Never There. We set a release date, worked backwards to mark a few key dates and got going. We googled everything – from how to write a press release to what should be in a press kit, and trawled Facebook/Twitter and everywhere for good press contacts. And we contacted a lot of people who we knew or who had said nice things about us in the past. It was very hit and miss, but we also were really lucky with some of the support we got, and it worked better than we could have imagined – getting coverage on some big websites and even national airplay on Radio X. It really put us in a strong place going forwards to build on for future releases and opening up other opportunities. So sometimes it’s good to take a step back and make a plan! Might not be the most inspiring advice, but we’ve found it a really important step.

I’m delighted that you’ll be joining us this year at LOUD WOMEN Fest! Do you often play with other female musicians? What are you expecting/looking forward to at the Fest? 

Leila: To be honest it varies a lot bill to bill whether we play with other female musicians. I don’t like to say it’s a pleasant surprise when we do, but often it is. We’ve played a few festivals that are focused around female artists – Ladyfests in Manchester and elsewhere, and now LOUD WOMEN Fest, and although they shouldn’t still be necessary, they clearly still are and they have been some of the most amazing atmospheres we’ve played in.

Zoe: The line-up looks so strong. I’m expecting to be completely blown way, to be honest. By the quality and energy of the music in the room, and by the people coming down to watch and dance. It sounds like LOUD WOMEN has got something really special going on, so we can’t wait to finally be a part of it. It looks mega!

Leila: We’ve heard amazing things about DIY Space for London too. Spaces like this are so important. We just played the opening of Partisan Collective in Manchester, another co-op space, and it was such a great night – actually one of our favourite gigs in a while. So we’re expecting a similar, electric atmosphere! It’s exciting to be playing so close to home for me – randomly doors down from where LIINES recorded our album, but also where I went to primary school and grew up!
