Eau the Music, the solo project of Ottawa-based artist Ophelie Quraishi, delves into uncertainty on In This Silence, the first single from her debut album, Light in the Dark. Rooted in shoegaze and dream pop, the track has a cinematic, twilight atmosphere reminiscent of Slowdive, gradually gathering weight and intensity before opening up in full.
Quraishi’s voice begins ethereal and almost weightless, wrapped in guitars and reverb. As the track builds, her vocals grow with it, eventually merging with waves of fuzz and layered guitars. This balance of fragility and strength recalls Wolf Alice: even at the song’s most intense moments, her voice retains its delicacy.
The real heart of the track, however, lies in its lyrics. “In this silence I remain” becomes a mantra about learning to live with uncertainty, whether it comes through grief, distance, the fear of being misunderstood or the need to give others time and space. “Love survives me once again” introduces another powerful idea: that love can endure even when everything around it changes or disappears.
The unfinished line “Will we learn to…” leaves the central question unresolved. Perhaps that is precisely the point: not knowing what we are meant to learn, carrying on without answers and trusting that hope can still emerge from the darkest moments. As the guitars fade, “In This Silence” offers not a conclusion, but a gateway into the vulnerable, luminous and hopeful world Quraishi will unveil on Light in the Dark.
