Detroit-based Hayley and the Crushers have released their new EP, Unsubscribe from the Underground.
The EP follows the band’s 2022 album Modern Adult Kicks, and opens with lead single ‘Unsubcribe’, a Go-Go’s-esque jab at elitism that exists within underground music scenes. It’s a great example of the bands songwriting capabilities – they have a knack for writing melodies that stay in your head all day.
‘Alleyways’ is an anthemic pop-punk offering that reminds me of 00’s bands like Halo Friendlies, Tuuli, and Manda and the Marbles, while ‘Blood and Treasure’ offers a change of pace, with its nostalgic 60’s girl group vibe. The steel-guitar mixed with the bands power pop sound immediately reminded me of Josie Cotton – a fair comparison, given that this EP was partially recorded at Cotton’s own Kitten Robot Studio in Los Angeles.
The EP finishes up with 90’s pop-punk inspired ‘Let Go’, and a punked-up cover of Juice Newton‘s 1981 country-pop ‘Queen of Hearts’.
Hayley and the Crushers are clearly a band with a whole wealth of influences behind them. By combining them with their “poolside glitter punk” sheen, they’ve created a sound that manages to be nostalgic and fresh at the same time.
Unsubscribe from the Underground is out now via Kitten Robot Records.
