Leave it to Bostonian country music artist, Elisa Smith to take the steamy tropes of romance novels and turn them into a heavy-hitting, slow-burn anthem. On ‘Smut,’ a centerpiece track from her upcoming album Perfume, Smith leans into uninhibited desire with a wink and a heavy bassline. This track is intoxicating, refusing to apologize for what women want and Smith says:
“‘Smut’ is great fun. I recently got into reading smutty little novels and I know a lot of other folks have, too! So I wrote a song about it. There are a lot of people making commentaries about why women are reading more of these titillating books but honestly, I think women have always read these books, now they’re just talking about it more instead of hiding them behind magazines while riding the train. I thought it’d be fun to write a song that sounds like how a smut novel reads, and so that’s what I did.”
Musically, ‘Smut’ is a moody track that trades fast tempos for a dense, theatrical atmosphere. Driven by a booming low-end and an unhurried groove, it blends classic country-rock grit with a dark, almost gothic Americana edge. The layered gritty and baritone guitars create a hypnotic, weighty sonic backdrop that lets Smith’s smoky voice take center stage.
As a certified smutty romance lover, the sultry vocal delivery and unapologetic lyrics had me hooked from the start. Smith reclaims the narrative around women’s escapism and turns it into pure, dark-edged gold. ‘Smut’ is a fiery, unforgettable track that proves Smith is operating at the top of her craft.
