Helena Casella, the Belgian-Brazilian composer and vocalist, takes us on a journey of the senses with her single ‘Conclusions’, the second track from her album Tumult.
‘Conclusions’ continues to draw on influences from her roots, but this time Helena cranks up the groove, delivering a generous helping of funk and soul.
The track opens with a plucked bassline before the drums kick in, funk oozing from the breaks and underlying wah-wah guitars. There’s a hint of Thundercat in its foundations, but also a real appreciation of the funk and soul archives, drawing on those influences to create something rich and engaging.
Helena’s vocals, with an experimental edge reminiscent of Christine and the Queens, are beautifully clear throughout, offering a journey of their own. Warm and nurturing, they sit prominently in the mix, often layered with breathy backing vocals to create a stunning sonic millefeuille against a backdrop of lush basslines and hints of guitar groove. Despite the many layers, each element is given its moment to shine, reflecting the meticulous arrangement and production of the track. The result is a delight, full of rhythmic changes and unexpected turns.
Clever effects during the mid-song break enhance this further, offering a moment to absorb the track’s message: finding love in the everyday, holding on to something “so sweet and irresistible”, and recognising the risks that come with opening yourself up to it.
Speaking about the single, Helena explains:
“Conclusions reveals the realisation that love is always around and graspable if you’re open for it, although it can sometimes be hard to come out of your shell. I wanted to give the feeling of moving with confidence through an idyllic landscape where you’ve finally witnessed love floating through the air as if never seen before.”
The song evokes a blissful stroll through her mother’s herb and flower garden, with lemongrass, lavender, thyme, mint and rose petals conjuring images of honey balm warmed between the palms. It’s beautiful imagery that perfectly complements the warmth and atmosphere of the music.
