South London-based multidisciplinary artist Clara Mann shares ‘Oblivion’, taken from her upcoming album Wishbone, out 23 October via state51.

‘Oblivion’ explores the what-ifs of love through a coin toss of destiny, where the decision is already made before it lands. Mann’s vocals, weightless yet heavy, move against wistful strings, creating a tension between lightness and emotional weight.

“Loving is accepting the light and the dark of something, or of someone – often when someone burns very bright, it’s matched by a great capacity for heaviness. Someone said to me, at a very heightened time in my life, that sometimes falling in love feels like looking into oblivion’. I went home and wrote the first verses of this song- and then I let it be for a few months, unable, at that point, to resolve it.

A few months down the line after falling in love, I looked back and realised that there must have been a time when I could have chosen a different path for myself, and for us, but I don’t know where that crossroads was, and I don’t recall ever actively making a decision. Love was an inevitability, in some sense, something I already knew was going to happen, from the very start. I finished the song that day.

‘Oblivion’ is about tossing a coin and realising, as it turns, that you’ve already made your decision.”
