Dynamic London pop artist and producer CHINCHILLA is seething in a frustration spawned from betrayal and heartbreak on her angry atmospheric single ‘Viper’, out and available to relate to now.
‘Viper’ is a raw dramatic pop song, but soul is the compass that got us here. Singer Daisy Bertenshaw rages and hurts over pulsing production. On the hook, her voice is strong with an emotional friction that mirrors the feeling the lyrics lay out. She could scat with no discernible words and the message would hit the same. “Said you’d never leave – you fucking viper.”
‘Viper’ is from that peak stage of angry heartbreak. Pure betrayal rage… All the things you feel but shouldn’t say out loud because it’s not fair or diplomatic or whatever. God I love writing those feelings into songs.”
CHINCHILLA ON SINGLE ‘VIPER’
The production from Swedish producer Hampus is reminiscent of British artist and composer Labrinth, known for scoring the first two seasons of American coming-of-age drama Euphoria with a maximal alternative hip hop flair. The choral synth that rises every time she belts creates this feeling in the chest usually found in the most aching gospel, soul, and blues corners. There are layers of sonic intention here that really add to the grief being conveyed.
Bertenshaw’s phenomenal vocal is what makes this power ballad shine. CHINCHILLA being the the first female soloist to top Billboard’s Emerging Artist Chart isn’t a shock if you have heard her sing anything at all.
