Heaven Schmitt’s alter ego Grumpy takes on a new form with Unfindable Ring, transforming from a solo project into a collective. Schmitt is joined by Anya Good, Ellie Long (Kid Lake), Austin Arnold, Diego Clare (D.A. Crimson) and Lane Rodgers.
Pulled from Schmitt’s imagination, Unfindable Ring is an adventurer’s tale told through a genre-blurring mix of synths, jazz, honky-tonk, shoegaze and glitchy vocoder. The expanded lineup brings a new dimension to the Grumpy world, building out its latest incarnation as a collective.
Lead single ‘OBL’ reflects the band’s reality on the road, balancing an awareness of the dangers they face with gratitude for the small miracle of making it this far. As a band that is almost entirely trans (five-sixths, with Austin Arnold the exception), that awareness is never far away. Schmitt explains:
“We are living these happy lives, and there are people we come across who don’t know us at all who want us to die.”
Despite that reality, Unfindable Ring is ultimately about continuing to live, pushing forward and finding joy along the way.
