FRANKIE FLOWERS knows that sometimes it’s not the answer that drives you crazy, but the need to know. On ‘augusta’, the Ontario-based alternative artist takes one increasingly loaded question, “Where did you sleep last night?”, and turns it into a feverish spiral of suspicion, jealousy and paranoia.
Dark, grungy and slightly off-kilter, ‘augusta’ blends synth-pop textures with an alternative rock edge, creating a sound that feels both mysterious and strangely addictive. There’s a little of the moody electronic darkness of Artemas here, but with a more jagged, punk-leaning energy reminiscent of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The production never feels completely settled, mirroring the uncertainty at the centre of the song.
“People keep telling me things
I just say they’re wrong”
FLOWERS immediately places the listener inside a mind trying desperately to convince itself that everything is fine. But then the question returns: “Where did you sleep last night?” Again and again, the song circles back to it, each repetition making the mystery feel heavier.
What exactly happened is never made clear, and that’s what makes ‘augusta’ so effective. Maybe there’s something to be suspicious of, maybe there isn’t. At a certain point, it almost doesn’t matter. FLOWERS captures that horrible feeling of needing an answer so badly that the answer itself becomes secondary. You just need to know.
There’s also something wonderfully sinister about the track. The line “the thing about the devil is he takes care of his own” adds another layer of unease, making the song feel like it could belong on the soundtrack of a dark coming-of-age thriller. It’s the kind of track that leaves you wondering whether you’re witnessing a relationship falling apart or watching someone’s mind convince itself that it already has.
Developed alongside members of Toronto punk outfit The OBGMs, ‘augusta’ is the first taste of FLOWERS’ upcoming eight-track debut album My Love Is a Dog From Hell!, due in November. FLOWERS is taking the concept beyond the music too, with each song on the album being transformed into its own fragrance in collaboration with a local perfumery.
‘augusta’ is grungy, mysterious and deliciously unsettling. FRANKIE FLOWERS turns jealousy and uncertainty into an obsessive hook, proving that sometimes the questions we can’t answer are the ones that stay with us the longest.
‘augusta’ was released on 18 September 2026 alongside its official music video.
