Eora/Sydney-based songwriter and indie-rocker total tommy (Jess Holt) releases sophomore album Trapezoid via Play It Again Sam.
Written between London and Sydney and co-produced with Tom Stafford, Trapezoid combines sharp guitars and in-your-face lyricism with relatable storytelling, drawing on grunge, emo, post-punk, pop punk and post-rock, threaded with the grit of 2000s anthems. Mirroring the shape of its namesake, the album explores different sides of Holt’s songwriting, from the familiar to the off-kilter.
New single ‘Gutterball’ captures the frustration of wanting to shake up the day-to-day, only to find yourself pulled back to reality. Holt explains:
“My wife and I wrote Gutterball over a weekend away down on Sydney’s south coast. It was raining and we were drinking wine, dreaming about the adventures we wanted to take together – but the timing wasn’t aligning for us. There was a sense of frustration on both sides, each wanting a bit of a shake up from our daily lives but knowing we couldn’t just yet.“
Trapezoid is a whirlwind of nostalgia-tinged chaos, fuelled by Holt’s sharp songwriting and unique perspective.
