If you’re serious about making music, nothing can stop you, not even war. Just ask Death Pill, the Ukrainian trio of Mariana, Nataliia and Anastasiia, who now live in Ukraine, Australia and Spain. The distance hasn’t kept them quiet: following 2025’s Sologamy, they’re back with Silver Butterfly, their first track written and recorded entirely remotely.
And what a blast it is. Death Pill have the riot grrrl spirit in their blood, but they don’t just protest, they roar. The verses tear along on fast, melodic punk, all abrasive riffs and grubby distortion that recalls The Distillers, while an insistent, brazen bass adds a street-smart edge à la Amyl and the Sniffers. Then the chorus blows everything apart in a burst of frenzied, spasmodic, theatrical hardcore that sits right alongside Otoboke Beaver, with vocals lurching from the mocking delivery of classic riot grrrl bands to full-throated screams.
Behind the whirlwind, there’s a message worth hearing. Silver Butterfly pushes back against the frantic pace we live at, always rushing on to the next thing and never allowing ourselves to stop. And here’s the paradox: Death Pill use breakneck speed to stand up for our right to slow down, breathe and enjoy the moment.
Brilliance, fury and talent in spades: don’t take your eyes off this lot. Here’s hoping the miles don’t get in the way of more new music very soon.
