LOUD WOMEN is thrilled to premiere ‘Time To Grow Up’, the first single from Pupal Phase, the debut four-song EP from indie musical and DIY punk show hybrid Lost Grrrl Found, out 23 October.
Lost Grrrl Found is inspired by the 1990s riot grrrl movement, now expanding beyond the stage with the release of its debut EP, Pupal Phase. Set in the Pacific Northwest, Lost Grrrl Found follows college freshmen Izzy and Morgan in the aftermath of a friendship breakup. Known as “the only play with a mosh pit”, the musical buzzes with DIY punk show energy, exploring queerness, art as activism, and the transformative power of a crush.
Over years of Lost Grrrl Found live shows, Abby Mohaddes and Marvelyn Ramirez (pictured above) have shaped the roles of Izzy and Morgan. The history they’ve built into these characters comes through in their vocal performances on ‘Time To Grow Up’.
New York-based creative partners Penelope Gould and Holly Nance began writing Lost Grrrl Found during their freshman year at NYU’s Dramatic Writing program, creating a bond through their shared love of riot grrrl and queer culture. Now joined by director/musician/writer Marina Carlstroem, Nance shares exclusively with LOUD WOMEN the origins of Lost Grrrl Found, the new EP and what’s coming up:
“Penelope and I met in college, on the first day of freshman year, in a writing class. Neither of us were out as lesbians, but we bonded over a shared love of Carrie Brownstein, But I’m A Cheerleader, and Bikini Kill, so the writing was on the wall.
We wrote the first draft of Lost Grrrl Found separated by the pandemic. We were missing performance, shows, drama, LIFE, and through emails and video calls, we channelled that energy into writing. Our completed draft sat dormant as we returned to New York, unsure of how to make this play/DIY show a reality.
Marina Carlstroem, a friend and collaborator of Penelope’s, heard about this dormant script and helped chart a path to putting on the show. With a director on board, we gave it a shot and DIY’d our way forward. Two and a half years later, we are releasing our first EP, and celebrating with a show at Stone Circle Theatre on 10/24 and making our West Coast debut in Los Angeles at Zebulon on 1/21.”
The four-song EP Pupal Phase focuses on the complex relationship between Izzy and Morgan. ‘Time To Grow Up’ is a bittersweet track about the realization that their friendship is no longer what it once was.
“We enter Morgan and Izzy’s relationship at an inflection point. ‘Time To Grow Up’ is a sonic exploration of the moment the friendship necklace is broken into two parts. Saccharine, chuggy rhythm guitar buoys scathing lyrical cuts, as Morgan deflects from her inner turmoil by pushing Izzy away. There is a quintessential piece of grrrlhood in this shocking, intimate severance. Whether you’ve been the initiator or the one left in the lurch, a friendship’s abrupt end can unravel everything you believe to be true. This song spins out the pain on both sides and sets our duo on their journey of discovery. Morgan and Izzy’s break up ballad cozies up to the whimsical swath of riot grrrl, in the vein of Tiger Trap and Dressy Bessy.”
