Ahead of debut album ‘I Wanna Know If It’s Real’ Lake Malice have released a new euphorically sad single ‘rly OK’. It continues the electric vibes of previously released songs from the album whilst enhancing the hyper-pop element that makes Lake Malice so unique. Although the saxophone solo was a truly unexpected but great treat from the band!
There are some songs that end up becoming a part of a specific time in your life because somehow the release gets timed so perfectly; ‘rly Ok’ was exactly that for me. The upbeat pop melody felt strangely familiar, like the boost that I give myself to go through my day to fit in to society and not overload anyone else with my emotions. Whilst the lyrics revealed perfectly what the battle of trying to balance exhaustion and living your best life feels like.
“Oh are we really ok
Just having the time of our lives
Or are we wasting away”
Whilst the energy of the song could be compared to ‘Throne’ by Bring Me The Horizon, even they don’t relate so strongly to the emotional burden of modern life. But they have included saxophones in some of their live performances, so lets hope that we will get to see that from Lake Malice.
Alice Guala revealed the thoughts behind the track, and they might be just as important as the music itself:
“I wrote this thinking about the reality for artists nowadays, or people who seek a career in a creative field, as that seems harder and harder when you need to pay bills first. More generally though, rly ok came from asking whether we’re actually living, or just becoming really efficient at coping. I don’t think humans are designed to live like this.
Lake Malice are quickly becoming one of my favourite bands. Not just for their music but personality, they don’t shy away from being themselves and that’s so important in a world that’s all about sales.
