New York alternative rock quartet Mona Freaka speak to LOUD WOMEN about feminism, being underestimated as young women in music, and carrying the spirit of riot grrrl into a new generation.
Roxy Bollé, Shea Delisio, Jill Sofro and Gemma Holstein met through Rock Academy in upstate New York and have developed a collaborative sound rooted in punk, grunge and alternative rock.
Speaking to BRIT School student Evie Cross, the band explain why feminism remains urgently relevant, particularly for young women trying to establish themselves in the music industry.
“A lot of people think that feminism isn’t really needed anymore, or relevant,” they explain. “We’re kind of about bringing the power back to women in music, especially young women.”
The band also discuss writing music together, their dream collaborators, the songs that mean the most to them and the new material they are recording this summer.
