SINBIOTIC opens with a riff. Across just three tracks, A.N.J.A deliver a heavy, tense and intensely physical alternative rock EP, powered by dense, repetitive and almost hypnotic guitars. Their sound combines the rhythmic pull of Queens of the Stone Age with the force of hard rock, the raw edge of garage punk and a touch of alternative metal. Anja Romer’s vocals move between restraint and defiance, at times recalling the theatrical authority of PJ Harvey.

The EP explores obsession, desire, the loss of autonomy and the more destructive sides of human relationships. Its title appears to twist the idea of symbiosis: these connections sustain the characters, but ultimately consume them too.

“Jet Girl” is the record’s most immediate and frenetic track. Its raw, distorted guitars have an almost garage-rock quality, locking into a sharp and relentless rhythm. The drums drive the song forward without pause, creating a constant sense of momentum, reinforced by its punk attitude and occasional shouted vocals that bring to mind the rawness of L7. Beneath that energy, the lyrics turn desire into fuel: nitroglycerine, kerosene, petrol and war machinery create a world in which attraction becomes dependence.

“Mallory Knox” raises the pressure with heavier, more open riffs rooted in modern hard rock. The song plays on the contrast between restrained verses and broad, forceful choruses. Romer dominates the mix, moving from intimacy to a commanding shout within moments. The reference to the character from Natural Born Killers suits lyrics centred on escape, violence and shared madness. “This madness takes two” captures a relationship turned folie à deux, in which the promise to remain together also becomes a march towards destruction.

“Men Will Die Tonight” closes the EP with its heaviest and most forceful moment. The main riff is dry, weighty and relentless. The drums hit with the punch of hard rock and alternative metal, while the bass adds depth without sacrificing the groove. Its insistent riff and defiant tone recall L7’s “Shitlist”, although A.N.J.A give the idea additional weight through touches of stoner rock and alternative metal. The vocal delivery is more controlled and melodic, yet loses none of its intensity.

Concise, direct and tightly focused, SINBIOTIC packs considerable personality and power into just three tracks. It is a compelling EP that rewards close attention.
