Caroline Glaser, a Nashville-based singer and songwriter behind the project Brother Bird, shares a new single, ‘Dirt’. Part of her upcoming album The Lodge In Miller County, due out on 25 September via Easy Does It Records, ‘Dirt’ is an indie track with velvety vocals like Mazzy Star’s, and cathartic, strong choruses like The Cranberries’.
A poem Glaser stumbled upon in a therapy book inspired the album’s concept. In The Lodge In Miller County, Glaser explores the notion that the feelings, good and bad, are like guests; they should be welcomed, not ignored. Lyrically, ‘Dirt’ encapsulates the flawed human essence, the back-and-forth between trying to overcome trauma and being consumed by it. Sonically, it ties in with the other two released singles, ‘Chameleon’ and ‘Pariah’ — rich, lo-fi indie instrumentals and nervous sensitivity conveyed in a lulling Tennessee voice.
“‘Dirt’ is a semi-autobiographical track,” Glaser explains. “It’s reflective and honest, but a little bitey and mean. It touches on generational dysfunction and traumas. An unfiltered internal dialogue between present and past self…it’s an attempt at breaking certain cycles while acknowledging that some will never be fully broken. Everyone is ‘in the dirt’ together…’together, forever, no end’…we all have our shit, so to speak. We do get to decide which pile of mud we wanna hang out in, though. And thank god for that.”
The music video is both literal and metaphoric – while in some shots Glaser digs into the dirt with a shover, in others she is driven away with a picturesque sky in the background; the line “Tell ya when you get older / You’re gonna leave it all behind, behind” is a forgiving, nonjudgmental closure.
