I, Doris opened with a characteristically changeable lineup, featuring Saz from The Ondines on guitar and Tee from Wokerati Party on drums. The Dorisses have now officially claimed Tee as their “summer drummer”, joining them for their UK gigs through to the end of the summer before their autumn international adventures. They also debuted a brand new song, which was VERY exciting.
Next up, Bristol’s Moxie Dolls absolutely blew us away. A properly stonking band with brilliant songs, expert musicians and lovely folk to boot. It feels like they’re right at the start of a very exciting adventure, and it was a thrill to witness.
By the time Sisters of Hysteria took over, we’d already fallen in love with them during their LOUD WOMEN Radio session earlier in the week. Their set currently includes some very well-chosen covers, including Muse’s ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ and one of our favourite PJ Harvey songs, ‘Sheela-Na-Gig’, but it’s their original material that makes it clear this brand-new band are serious ones to watch. Incredible musicians, every single one of them, and an absolute joy to host.
Thank you to the lovely crowd, and to everyone at The Bread & Roses for being so welcoming and helpful. Special shout-out to John on sound, who dealt with some last-minute drum-kit gremlins promptly and without fuss. We love putting on gigs there and hope to get another date in the diary soon.
Huge Team LOUD WOMEN thanks to our super snappers Keira Anee and Natasha Winge, and Eve Pitt who came along to help for the first time and did amazing work on the door, managing merch and, above and beyond the call of duty, staging a full modelling session with our brand-new T-shirts. Keep your eyes peeled for those.
Next up is our Rebellion Festival London Preview at The Windmill, Brixton, on Sunday 2 August, from 5–10pm. Breakup Haircut, Gaydar, I, Doris, Nell Davies, Mona Freaka from New York, Whoremones from LA and Witch Spit from Australia, all for £10. See you there!
