Whenever I meet music industry suits these days, they ask me the same question: “Who’s the next Amyl and the Sniffers? Who’s the next Lambrini Girls?” Lately, my answer has become very simple: Lady Lazarus.
Less than a year after relocating from Australia to Berlin, the international riot grrrls have delivered a debut album that feels less like a first record and more like a statement of intent. DICHOTOMY is a grenade.
Recorded in a converted Second World War bunker on the outskirts of Berlin, DICHOTOMY explores the contradictions that make us who we are.
“We are martyrs and sinners, mothers and daughters, poets and shit-talkers, confident adults and insecure kids – all at once,” says vocalist Caroline. “This album is meant to address all of the excitement, wonder, anger, pain and confusion that comes with being alive.”
That complexity runs through every track. Lady Lazarus have all the righteous fury and DIY spirit you’d expect from a riot grrrl band, but there’s far more going on here than anger alone. These are songs that balance vulnerability with venom, politics with personality and hooks with a relentless sense of purpose.
LOUD WOMEN readers already know what Lady Lazarus are capable of. Earlier this year they co-organised LOUD WOMEN Fest Berlin, sponsored by Marshall, creating a showcase for women and gender-diverse artists in heavy music that perfectly reflected the values they sing about. They’ve since shared stages with Skunk Anansie and Destroy Boys, and this year you can catch them at both Rebellion Festival and LOUD WOMEN Fest London.
