Brooklyn-based alt-rock trio Myra Lee, formerly known as Dino Expedition, release their debut album, Capture The Flag.
Myra Lee’s name is inspired by Cat Power’s 1996 album. Composed of lead singer and guitarist Tahlia Amanson, bassist Aiden Velazquez, and drummer McCabe Teems, Myra Lee draw influence from ’90s acts such as Yo La Tengo, Pavement, and the legendary Sonic Youth, blending vibrating guitar feedback, smooth vocals, and a fearless approach to revisiting the past.
On their debut album, Myra Lee create an intimate roadmap through themes of alcoholism, sexuality, and grief. With exclusive insight from Tahlia, she reflects on the most difficult yet liberating song to write on Capture The Flag.
“I would say ‘Corkscrew Drawers’ felt most liberating and difficult for me to write, as it is written about a serious thing in my life that really actually kickstarted my need/want to write. I originally started writing music as a way to talk to my parents. It felt like they weren’t listening to my constant fears about their life decisions. ‘Corkscrew Drawers’ was the first song I felt like most spoke towards/ really reached my parents. It continues to be a song that is difficult to play live as it’s a sensitive topic, but at the same time feels so freeing knowing so many go through this experience and that we can share a common ground.”
Focus track ‘Ten’ is a reflective song filled with the compounding emotions of figuring out who you are. While many people revisit that journey throughout their lives, for Tahlia, every new decade marks a fresh start on the horizon. Tahlia shares:
“’Ten’ is a bit different than most of the songs I have ever written, as for it’s a reflection on my relationship with myself and my identity, weaving through the discovering of who I am and who I love. It’s written about the decade between age ten to twenty. The significance of the title ten means this sort of rebirth of identity for me. I usually see things in tens, always grew up that way, every ten years was/is like a new restart. While most of my songs are speaking about something in my family, this song is for my younger self, giving her a little pat on the back.”
Capture The Flag is a striking debut album that showcases Myra Lee’s endless potential.
