Baltimore-based Quattracenta released their album, III on their label, Phantomscape Records with distribution via legendary, Dischord Records. Quattracenta, a feminized version of the Italian quattracento references a movement from the abstract forms of the Middle Ages to the explosion of art, culture, and literature of the Renaissance. Quattracenta is incredibly true to that inspiration with their moody, atmospheric, and deeply expressive sound.

The lead single, ‘Conjures’ is compelling, dark, and haunting. Sarah Matas’ guitar work creates texture while her vocals are understated and the calming breath in contrast to the rhythm section. The bassline, thanks to Christian Sturgis is a dark heartbeat, anchoring the track with its heavy pulse while drummer, Andrea Shearer is intentional, hypnotic, and propels the song forward. Rather than build into a crescendo, Conjures shows restraint in the best ways.

The sequence of the album is brilliantly paced, operating like a classic post-punk record, building tension before letting the atmosphere stretch and breathe. J Robbins production captures the grit of a live show while ensuring that every instrument hits with maximum emotional impact. If you dig early PJ Harvey, Helium, Slint, or Lungfish then III is for you. The record is beautiful, uncompromising, and completely consumes your attention.
