RØRY has never made their internal conflicts and outward struggles a secret, amassing a following on social media with their comical and honest accounts of living with ADHD and their move back into alternative music, whilst fighting the ageism of the industry. Bearing their soul raw on their hotly anticipated album BLOODLETTING, set for release 4th September – produced with long-term collaborators and Kingdoms and mixed by the dynamic Dan Lancaster – RØRY has been showcasing the weighted emotion behind her new sound, and latest single ‘STRANGE’ perfectly demonstrates the level of vulnerability and confliction we can expect on the album.
| What happens when the dreams come true but the grief remains? When the wounds heal but the anger stays buried beneath them? When mortality, loss and heartbreak continue to exist regardless of how much progress you have made? |
‘STRANGE’ was inspired by the frustrating feeling of trying to move on from a past experience but still being weighed down by the negativity that came from a time gone. It’s pulled from RØRY’s progressive work in therapy tainted by the lingering anger and sadness for everything they went through, and asks how do we move on from something that created such sadness? ‘STRANGE’ is an absolute gut-punch, reminding us we will always carry our trauma no matter what we do, but we can choose to let it destroy us or come back stronger.
Drawing on a blend of genres, ‘STRANGE’ is built around alt-metal and rock riffs and beats that fluctuate in volume and power with swelling synths reverberating in the background, giving space for RØRY to ask the difficult questions before rising to a feverish pitch, falling away to stripped back notes under heart-breaking lyrics “oh how strange it is, to wanna die, to wanna live?” the instruments and layered vocals rushing back in with a heart-lifting tone and pace that embodies the feeling of accepting the things we cannot change and choosing to carry on as best as we can.
RØRY makes their debut appearance at Download Festival on the Apex Stage, 13:10-13:55 Sunday 14th.
