Baby Smith

Australia-born, Berlin-based duo Baby Smith (Ray Sonder and Saxon Gable) share ‘Walkie Talkie’, the latest single from their upcoming debut album Lately, Love Is Dead, out 10 July.

‘Walkie Talkie’ exposes self-doubt and paranoia, capturing the back-and-forth tension of who can be trusted, set against a catchy beat. Baby Smith shares:

“‘Walkie Talkie’ is us shining a light on our past insecurities and self-doubt. Lyrically, we immersed ourselves in our past experiences, navigating relationships where we struggled to stay rational and fight off the paranoia of being with someone we couldn’t completely trust. When someone is saying one thing and doing another, you feel torn about what the reality of your circumstances actually are. Which side of them can be trusted? What is the nature of your relationship? Are they in or out? All these questions come up in your head and in reality just the nature of those questions or the fact that they arise in the first place should be enough to make you see the truth but denial can be a cunning enemy. We had these ghosts of the past show their faces and some long gone experiences were going through our heads when writing this. The colour and texture of the song came out in technicolour and somewhat care free but to us the emotion is mirky and claustrophobic. Contrast in songwriting is important and contradiction can create a nice tension sonically, we really played with this concept in ‘Walkie Talkie’.”

“The concept for the music video came together by pure chance! We got tickets to see Sorry play in Berlin last year. During the show we met an artist by the name of Lena Westerburg Burr who builds sculptures out of wire. She folds the wire in patterns which give them strength and stability, and she is able to create magnificent structures from this. She showed us a glove she had made and we both instantly knew we had to make a music video wearing these gloves. So we did! Lena was brilliant and helped us out on the day. Another friend of ours knew of an abandoned castle in the north of Germany so we decided to ask some pals to dress up as bunnies and pretend to be in our band and we all drove up there and shot it over a couple of days. It was a load of fun!”
