As part of their biggest headline tour to date, pop punk sensations, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers (TJJT), smashed out the final leg of their Australian “Glory” Tour at the UNSW Roundhouse in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.
From the moment lead singer Anna Ryan came on, criss crossing the stage, the all ages crowd was jumping and dancing to the enigmatic band. A look out from the photo pit just showed the joy everyone was experiencing.
The stage adorned in flowers, and a giant glittery backdrop made for the perfect setting across the night, particularly the traditional slower middle part of the gig.
Introduced with words “We’re about to do something completely unpredictable”, the photographer in me was looking around for things for the band to jump off (like Lambrini Girls), instead the remaining four original members, Anna Ryan, lead guitarist Scarlett McKahey, drummer Neve van Boxsel (with egg shakers, gifted by a past fan, in hand) and bassist Jaida Stephenson all came to the front to sing slowler tracks such as ‘DAYLIGHT’.
It was an endearing moment with the band shedding some tears and hugs and before calling a return to the final, louder and very much rockier, part of the TJJT set. Perhaps best summarised by the band themselves, “you came for a rockshow and stayed for a soft show”. It was clear this was a significant moment for the band, and it was clear how much they meant to each other.
And boy did TJJT get straight back into it, smashing through some of their biggest hits, from ‘MOTHER’ and then straight into their newly released cover (for triple J’s Like A Version) of t.A.T.u. ‘All The Things She Said’, before closing out with ‘BALCONY’ and in the process eschewing the traditional encore.
My notes from the gig, neatly encapsulate how good the closing part of the gig was, just noting “Hits Hits Hits”.
With one more gig in Australia on 16 May 2026, the Glory tour then moves to New Zealand for three shows before heading off to Europe and North America.
Supporting TJJT Darcie Haven and her three piece band, proved a perfect accompaniment particularly for an all-ages gig.
Haven’s upbeat poppy music of acoustic guitar, supported with drums, electric guitar and backing tracks of piano, synth, had the crowd dancing early, and clearly there were a lot of fans who were there for her. While the music was quite different from TJJT is style it felt like the pairing brought new audiences to both bands. It was also lovely being at a gig where you could see young kids running around with their ear defenders on.
