A spotlight interview with Mac, Devon and Annie of Washington DC's Mac N' Toss, ahead of their appearance at LOUD WOMEN Fest NYC on May 16.
How did you choose your bandname?
Devon came up with the name for the band! Mac and Devon had just started writing together – they didn’t even know Annie yet! Devon was itching for a band name to get started. They were doodling in a class and thinking about apples (their longtime favorite food) and it hit them: Mac N’ Toss… like Macintosh but punk! Devon drew an apple with a bite taken out of it and a little worm and sent it to Mac with the name and they both loved it :~)
Who’s in the band, and what do you all play/do?
Mac – bass / background vocals Devon – guitar / lead vocals Annie – drums / background vocals
Where do you call home (geographically and musically)?
DMV / DC
Describe your sound in three words.
radical, feminist, abrasive
Tell us about your music
Mac N’ Toss’s next release is called ‘Have You Ever Met A Boy’. This final single from our debut album is a grung-ed up folk/indie alt-rock song. It was originally written on an acoustic guitar and was adapted for electric instruments with the full band. This is a lesbian coming-of-age song – a real Bildungsroman if you will. It is driven by sass, a disdain for the status quo (men), and melodic bass + harmonized vocals.
What’s your local scene like?
DC has a vibrant music punk history, recognized but often disrespected! Riot grrrl has its roots in both Washingtons (DC and Seattle) and for us to be leading the revival here is a nod to history and a recognition of patriarchy in the DC scene.
What’s a dream gig or collaboration you must make happen before you die?
Headlining the Anthem in DC, and on stage, Annie will shave their head, Mac is going to time getting her period to free bleed, and Devon will hand out signed Macintosh apples to audience members. It’s our “Lady Gaga meat dress moment” as Devon says.
What’s next for you?
Our debut album release on July 31st, 2026, and our tour with original legendary DC riot grrrl, Gina Young, kicking off on August 1st, 2026 at the Black Cat in DC! Our tour is not announced yet, but the Loud Women community deserves a little sneak peak. Nothing wrong with starting a few rumors and getting the buzz going before we announce the ‘Not So Str8 Grrrl Tour’ on June 1st!
