‘Velveteen Girls’ is the exciting new single from New York City–based indie folk-rock songwriter Kim McClay, released ahead of her upcoming EP Worth It.
Kim McClay has been performing original songs across the bustling NYC music scene since 2020, having released her first debut album My Sanity in 2021. She has been deeply involved with the city’s theatre scene, collaborating with other musicians on an award-winning musical adaptation of Little Women – ‘Meg, Jo, Beth & Amy’.
Written as a response to the challenges of navigating the music industry as a woman and inspired by the beloved children’s novel ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’, the song balances frustration and sensitivity in a bold, yet vulnerable, rock anthem. Delivering a compassionate message of self-love to ‘every girl at any age’, reminding us to not look for validation in a world that would love to drag us down and instead find the confidence and see the beauty we have within ourselves.
What are we worth to each other? What do we owe our neighbors? Our family? Our friends? I wanted to touch on the importance of vulnerability- how valuable it is to turn into what’s uncomfortable and face it head-on.
