We’re We Might Die, and we’re awesome! That’s exactly how the Las Vegas punk trio describes themselves on their website, and hell yeah, they really are. Following the politically charged punch of their recent track ‘ICED OUT’, the band’s latest release, ‘SHIT CYCLE’, turns its focus to a different kind of frustration: the exhausting cycle of people who constantly complain about their problems but never try to fix them.

The song is an explosive blend, drawing on the legacy of riot grrrl and the raw energy of hardcore punk. The band’s diverse influences are reflected in the driving rhythm section, the song’s blistering speed and tempo, and its delivery. In under two minutes, it unleashes its full force, recalling classics such as Minor Threat or Discharge, but with a more modern edge, as heard in the hardcore style of Scowl or the disbanded Gel. Liv, the frontwoman, is brought to the forefront by the direct, no-frills punk style, where she showcases her personality and presence. Metal influences are also evident in the track’s slightly more melodic riffs, and above all in the vocals, in which she brings the conversational realism and melody typical of riot grrrl, both in its ’90s form and in more contemporary acts such as the Californian band Destroy Boys.

“Have you ever met someone who just complains, constantly? They seem like they are seeking solutions, but really they are just enjoying the attention and never intend on fixing their actual problems or situations. This song is about those people. They just continue the shit cycle, over and over and over again. Forever.” (Liv, bassist/vocalist)

We Might Die – ‘SHIT CYCLE’

All this energy and attitude are reflected in the lyrics of ‘SHIT CYCLE’. You know the person – everyone does. The one who texts you at midnight with the same problem they had last month and the month before, never actually looking for advice. Liv doesn’t hide her frustration: “I’m not your fucking therapist.” The real gut punch comes when the speaker realises that the complainer is not stuck, but comfortable, and that nothing will ever change. Then the chorus just keeps going, asking the same question over and over again, wearing you down in the same way that only truly circular conversations can.

With ‘SHIT CYCLE’, We Might Die announce themselves as one of the most exciting new voices in punk: sharp, unrelenting, and with nothing to soften.
