Brooklyn-based indie band Hiding Places want you to have a hypnotic listening experience. Their latest single, ‘One Hand’, is a repetitive callback to their folk roots, having been recorded with three acoustic guitars live in the studio. Organ-like keys add warmth and consistency to the overall mellow track, while bursts of electric guitar bridge the verses. Toward the end of the six-minute song, a haunting melodic riff reminds one of Memoryhouse momentarily before the song loops back to its main acoustic riff, a humble repetition more aligned with Angel Olsen or Julia Jacklin.
Their upcoming album, The Secret to Good Living out April 3rd, marks their first experience in a professional recording studio. Producer Michael Matsakis helped them create the riff-focused effect in ‘One Hand’, best experienced through headphones, through which the listener senses the sound spatially-hopping between the three live guitars. It is the kind of recording that cannot be done remotely, which is how Hiding Places was collarborating before they finally found themselves living together in a city. The result is an album that has the band collectively exploring themes of self-discovery, community, and deep inquiry.
‘One Hand’ follows the singles ‘Waiting‘ and ‘Holy Roller.‘ Their tour begins May 5.
