AtticOmatic’s second EP, Between Two, kicks off with the clunk of a tape player. It’s a fitting intro for an album that has strong 90s undertones and a disinctly DIY feel throughout. You’d be hard pressed to squash AtticOmatic into any one genre though; the band weave together elements of folk, grunge, pop and indie rock in a dreamy fusion with each song offering something unexpected.
Formed in a Brighton houseshare, AtticOmatic is made up of George Lappin (bass), Kamran Kaur (vocals/synth/keys) Lorcan Forder (vocals/guitar/synth) Kai Raghunath (drums) and Ollie White (guitar/synth). Together they explore joy, grief and the human condition. The vulnerability of AtticOmatic’s lyrics gives a raw energy that’s matched by the unpredictability of the music.
Kamran Kaur said of the EP’s most recent single:
Lewin isn’t necessarily one person to me. The Old English name means ‘dear friend’, but that could also refer to a part of yourself that feels estranged from you. ‘Lewin’ is something or someone lacking and you don’t know how you could have possibly lost them.
‘Hours,Years’ is full of the horror of being stifled to conform and forced to participate in a restrictive rat race, with lyrics such as “I know he squeals he can’t sit still/A man for the job/Is a man full of pills”. Existential dread flows through Between Two but its playfulness, beauty and curiosity render it cathartic.
