Giving up the comfort of having someone by your side can sometimes be more difficult than coping with being with the wrong person. East Yorkshire singer Fiona-Lee releases ‘Not My Friends’ a song that made me overthink a little. Not because it’s a situation that I am in or have been in but because it may be a fear that stops me from letting people get close to me. But this is why music is just so wonderful, you will never know what connection you will have until you take the time to truly listen.

Having performed at Glastonbury last year on the BBC Introducing stage Fiona-Lee is set to release her EP Every Woman on 17th April and from the first few already released songs it is going to be what the youth call – a real one – but in more analytical terms; the soulful lyricisms with soft but powerful vocal tones draw you in to the music. She describes her new song ‘Not My Friends’ better than anyone:

“Not My Friends is about trying to fill an emotional void at any cost to avoid feeling alone. It came from a time when I was investing in the wrong relationships with the wrong people and accepting less than I deserved because of the “something is better than nothing” mindset. That fear of loneliness can be a hard cycle to break, even when you’re fully aware of it. At its heart, Not My Friends is about self-awareness, recognising misplaced attachments, and having self compassion for when you fall back into those habits.”
